Mini Review: Hansel & Gretel

Hansel & Gretel (2007)
directed by Yim Pil-sung, written by Kim Min Suk
starring Cheon Jeon-yeong, Eun Won-jae, Shim Eun-kyeong, Jin Ji-hye
Korean w/ English subtitles

I actually watched this a while back but never got around to writing a review until now.   It’s a dark fantasy twist on the German fairytale of the same name.  There’s a role reversal of sorts where the children are not so innocent.  There are a a few scares but this isn’t really a horror movie.   It’s more suspense.  One of the first things you’ll notice when the protagonist first sees the house is the visual style which is very colourful and vibrant.  The special effects are also quite impressive which makes for an aesthetically pleasing package.  It’s backed up by a good story and the reveal is dramatic and creepy.  I enjoyed the film quite a bit and would recommend it to casual and serious film fans.  The dvd can be purchased from Evokative Films or can be streamed from The Auteurs.
