Asian (non)spotting (DVD cover edition)

So I was looking to buy some dvds of Asian films and I kinda noticed something…
or rather a lack of something.

AHHH! They have no upper torsos! No worries, it’s a good film that has no severed torsos. It was later remade by Hollywood with Mr. Gere & Jenny from the block.

The man with the awkward feet and the samurai are actually played by the same actor but of course you wouldn’t know it from these covers alone. Koji Yakusho’s face must be too hideous to have on a dvd cover.

Rain may not be well known in North America but it’s not like nobody on this side of the ocean listens to Kpop. You’d think showing his face is more likely to get impulse buys than not. On the other hand this is a sucky, overly fake looking action flick.

I’ll give this one a pass because it’s artsy and it’s one of my favourite films.

AHHH! They have no heads! And some of them do indeed lose their heads.

Kinda blurry but he does look Asian and constipated. Who he doesn’t look like is Andy Lau or Tony Leung (Chiu Wai), the two stars of the movie. It’s worse than if some dunce decided to only put Mark Wahlberg’s blurry face on the blu ray cover of The Departed.

Longtime fan of East Asian films. Former "movie reporter" on the music radio show / podcast "Beats From The East" broadcasted on Concordia University's CJLO 1690AM radio station in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
